“It is such a rewarding scheme to be part of… you are really helping these students' lives and helping them to realise their potential.”

More than 1,200 tutors have volunteered on our programmes.

We have volunteering opportunities available for tutors with a range of experience - from those just starting out to those who have already retired from teaching. Placements are available to support students both online and in-person, with a view to covering many subjects across primary, secondary and Post-16 levels.

FAQs

I have/haven’t had a criminal record check already - does that matter?

No, we’ll get you set up with a new one when you have completed training. If you already have a valid check in place, that’s great - but if it’s not registered with the Update Service we’ll need to get you a new one anyway. You will already know if your certificate is registered with the Update Service.

I am based overseas, can I still volunteer?

If you have a fixed address in the UK, yes. Volunteers who are travelling abroad but have a fixed UK address are assessed on a case by case basis. If you’re based abroad and don’t have a UK address, you won’t be able to volunteer with us.

Can I apply if I have never tutored before?

Yes! We are lucky to have an extremely high level of experience amongst our volunteering community, but if you meet our academic requirements and have a keen interest in teaching or tutoring, we’ll be able to provide you with the training you need to get started properly.

I have a full-time job, can I still volunteer?

Yes! We have lots of tutoring that takes place outside of working hours and some that takes place during the weekend. However, it’s likely that you’ll be waiting longer for a placement as most of our tutoring takes place during the school day. Please apply anyway!

Are there minimum academic requirements?

Yes. We expect all of our tutors to have a strong grade (B or higher) at A-Level or equivalent in the subject that they wish to tutor. If you don’t fit this requirement, but have studied a relevant degree or have significant tutoring experience already, chances are you will still be able to participate. Just let us know your situation and we’ll discuss it with you.

Is there a minimum time commitment?

Yes, we expect all volunteers to commit to a minimum of 10 hours’ teaching time. Most commonly, this will mean one hour-long session per week for 10 term-time weeks. Some projects call for more tutoring in a shorter period of time.
