‘Spotlight on’ our charity partners: SEO

At the Tutorfair Foundation, we work with many wonderful charities in our efforts to get tuition to students who will benefit from it the most. In this series, we’d like to highlight the important work our charity partners are doing with young people—and the ways in which you could get involved!

Spotlight on: SEO (Sponsors for Educational Opportunity)

Mission: “To prepare talented students from underserved and underrepresented backgrounds for career success.”

Website: www.seo-london.org

Originally founded in New York in 1963 to support school students from underserved communities in gaining admission to top colleges, SEO’s motto was that “ambition and intelligence – not postcodes or skin colour – should determine who succeeds in society.”

SEO London was launched many years later, in 2000–followed by its Schools Programme in 2012–to support London-based school students in the same way.

Through the Schools Programme, SEO works with high-achieving Year 11-13 pupils from underserved and underrepresented backgrounds. It aims to provide inspiration, guidance and support, to help ensure that students are able to overcome structural barriers to achieve their academic potential–and to go on to top universities.

At Tutorfair, we are very proud to be working with this brilliant charity for the second year running. SEO students are paired up with our volunteer tutors to receive an hour of one-to-one A-level tuition each week. Our volunteers are aiming to help students achieve their potential in upcoming exams–but the lessons are also a place for students to delve into subject knowledge beyond the school curriculum and challenge themselves, especially in preparation for their university applications.

Last year’s SEO cohort had the following to say about their Tutorfair lessons:

“They helped me fill many gaps in my knowledge of politics which in turn helped piece so many different parts of the subject together in my head”

“I gained a deeper, better understanding of economics and its application in the real world”

“They have allowed me to understand essay technique and structure”

“I had a great tutor who was clearly interested in the subject and helped me appreciate it too

If you’d like to volunteer with Tutorfair, we’d love to hear from you! Please do get in touch or sign up below.
