University Lecturing to Volunteer Tutoring - Skye's Story

This term, our students have been lucky enough to benefit from the knowledge and experience of our IB Biology tutor, Skye. This is what she had to say about her experience...

What is your teaching background?

I assisted in teaching undergraduate students (mainly in laboratory practicals) during my PhD. Also, I helped design and deliver a series of lectures which was really rewarding. I researched pedagogical studies and did some additional teaching as part of my training to become an associate fellow of the higher education academy.

What initially made you want to get involved with volunteer tutoring?

Although I had university level teaching experience, I was aware of the learning curve for teaching younger people, as well as re-visiting the school curriculum. Volunteering seemed like a great way to help myself while helping someone else at the same time.

How have you found tutoring online? Has it worked with your lesson style?

It’s been great! I was already used to online interactions due to the pandemic. It worked well with my lesson style because I like to copy and paste images and annotate them, which you can easily do with Bramble.

What have you found rewarding about the programme so far?

It’s a great feeling when the student shows they have learnt something from you. For example, by answering a practice question correctly that they wouldn’t have known just a week prior.

What would you say to potential new volunteers who are thinking about signing up in the future?

Definitely go for it. You end up learning so much more yourself so it is a win-win situation. In addition, the programme is well-managed, so you don’t get bogged down with admin.
