Gap Year Volunteering as a Tutor - Eman's Story

Online schooling during the pandemic posed great challenges to many students. However, it also equipped a new generation of school graduates with online learning skills that have carried through into great online teaching practice!

Eman is a gap year student, who volunteered tutoring GCSE Science during her year off. She is off to university to study Biochemical Sciences later this year.

Here's what Eman thinks of online volunteering with Tutorfair Foundation...

What made you want to start volunteering as a tutor?

I always have loved teaching but have never gotten a chance to formally tutor. With A-level exams out of the way, I thought volunteering would be the perfect way to step into tutoring and get an idea of what tutoring entails. As this was my first time teaching, I was a bit nervous. However, the Tutorfair Foundation team provided guidance throughout which made the whole tutoring process much less nerve wrecking.

How did you find the online aspect of tutoring?

I have found online tutoring to be great. Tutorfair Foundation provides a platform to tutor on (Bramble), so all you have to do is log in on time. Online tutoring is also perfect for those who can’t travel far and allows you to volunteer from the comfort of your own home.

What have you liked the most about the volunteering experience?

I personally love the progress my students make with me. It’s so heartwarming to see them gaining a better understanding of a subject which they might have found difficult before. And to see them finding that confidence. I believe every student has potential, so when they realise their potential and the fact that they can understand the subject, it’s truly a great feeling.

What would you say to gap year students thinking about signing up to be a volunteer tutor?

I would say to go for it! If you have the knowledge and want to help your students succeed, then you will do well regardless. Learning to teach takes time and this program will help you develop the skills needed for teaching. The Tutorfair Foundation team are also a call, message or email away and so you will be given lots of support should you struggle with something.
