How volunteering can boost your earning potential as a professional tutor

People volunteer with us for many reasons: to help tackle systemic inequality within the education sector, to give back to their community, or because they’re passionate about helping students achieve their potential.

Our volunteers tell us that they find working with our students to be an incredibly rewarding experience, and we hope that this will always be the case. But we also recognize that, in a cost of living crisis, volunteering can be an important tool for professional development.

If you’re thinking about becoming a private tutor–or you’ve already started tutoring privately, and want to improve your earning potential–then volunteering is a great way to invest time in developing your own skill set.

Gain experience and build confidence

By volunteering for an hour a week with the Tutorfair Foundation, you’ll have the opportunity to gain experience teaching your chosen subject (or subjects!) Teaching is best learned by doing - and if you’re looking to earn a living as a tutor, there’s no substitute for real experience. In racking up teaching hours, you’ll learn to communicate well with students, help them tackle obstacles they face in their learning, and refresh your own understanding of the content you teach.

Undergo training

At the Tutorfair Foundation, our onboarding process is designed to make sure you’re ready to work with young people as an academic tutor. The training you’ll undergo will be invaluable in your career as a private tutor - and will reassure parents and students that you’re fully ready to teach. All our new volunteers undergo safeguarding training and receive individualised feedback on their lesson-planning, as well as ongoing support from the Tutorfair team. We’ll also get you a free Enhanced DBS check, which you can register to the Update Service (also for free!) to ensure it automatically renews.

Use us as a reference!

We are always more than happy to provide our volunteers with references - and volunteers frequently do use us as a referee, both for tutoring-specific work and for career opportunities more generally. We make sure we have a close working relationship with our volunteers, so we’re able to whole-heartedly endorse their teaching skills and commitment to the profession when asked!

Many of our volunteers are already private tutors, or go on to tutor privately once they’ve built up their confidence - and we’re happy to help you make this transition in any way we can. We want your volunteering experience at the Tutorfair Foundation to be a rewarding one - for both you and the students you teach!
