Tutorfair profiles: meet Rebecca!
A volunteer with Tutorfair Foundation for over two years, Maths Circles mentor and now a trainee science teacher, Rebecca tells us a little about her experience working with us:
Hi, Rebecca! Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background?
I graduated in 2018 with a Chemistry with Maths degree, before going on to do a PhD in computational chemistry. This is when I joined Tutorfair as a science tutor, and I later became a Maths Circles mentor for the foundation. This led to other opportunities, and a huge boost in confidence, which has ultimately led to me training to become a secondary science teacher!
I would describe myself as a lifelong learner. I am interested in most subjects, but that wasn’t always the case - I actually switched both my degree and PhD research project. In primary school I was scared of science and struggled to follow instructions during practical work, but I persevered, found what works for me and surprised myself.
How did you first find out about Tutorfair?
I had tutored in maths and some science for quite a few years before joining Tutorfair. I was looking for a volunteer opportunity which would help me to gain more experience in tutoring science to a higher level, and I was also interested in SEND specialism.
How long have you been working with Tutorfair now?
About two and a half years. I have been helping one student to progress from the beginning and they are now sitting their exams this Summer, which is exciting. Recently, I have also been involved with the foundation's summer tuition project and have led several Maths Circles sessions.
What about Tutorfair and its mission most resonates with you?
Nobody chooses the circumstances they are born into. Nobody can change their life for the better themselves without educational support and the right help and guidance. Everyone deserves a chance and Tutorfair’s work really reflects this.
What has been your highlight since you started working with Tutorfair?
I am especially proud of the relationships I have developed with the young people I have worked with. Having pupils show up after a full school day with such enthusiasm for learning something new and challenging themselves is worth every single minute to me.
What advice would you give to someone looking to get involved in tutoring and make a difference to young people who need it the most?
I believe providing pupils with consistency and filling in gaps in their understanding has a huge knock-on effect on their confidence at school. Regular commitment is really key for helping them to progress over time. Be punctual and be present.
A pupil will remember you for who you are not what you know, so make mistakes and learn with them.My understanding of the world has greatly benefitted from teaching and tutoring, and vice versa, and I feel so privileged to be able to learn from my students.
Thanks so much for sharing your story, Rebecca!
