Methodology

The swim score is a real-time 0–10 rating that summarises swimming conditions at Hove Beach. It is calculated by starting at 10 and subtracting points based on environmental and safety factors:

  • Water quality (sewage activity):

    • −5 points for active discharge nearby

    • −3 points for recent discharge events

  • Wind:

    • −3 points if wind speed is above 25 km/h (very windy)

    • −1 point if wind speed is above 15 km/h (breezy conditions)

  • Wave height:

    • −4 points if waves are above 1.2 m (rough conditions)

    • −2 points if waves are above 0.8 m (choppy conditions)

  • Sea temperature:

    • −3 points if below 12°C (very cold)

    • −1 point if below 14°C (cool conditions)

The final score is grouped into three categories:

  • 🟢 Excellent (8–10) — calm, clean, and favourable conditions

  • 🟠 Mixed (5–7) — swimmable but with some caution

  • 🔴 Poor (0–4) — unsafe or uncomfortable conditions likely

This score is intended as a guide only and should be used alongside lifeguard advice and official beach warnings.
