Methodology
The swim score is a real-time 0–10 rating that summarises swimming conditions at Hove Beach. It is calculated by starting at 10 and subtracting points based on environmental and safety factors:
Water quality (sewage activity):
−5 points for active discharge nearby
−3 points for recent discharge events
Wind:
−3 points if wind speed is above 25 km/h (very windy)
−1 point if wind speed is above 15 km/h (breezy conditions)
Wave height:
−4 points if waves are above 1.2 m (rough conditions)
−2 points if waves are above 0.8 m (choppy conditions)
Sea temperature:
−3 points if below 12°C (very cold)
−1 point if below 14°C (cool conditions)
The final score is grouped into three categories:
🟢 Excellent (8–10) — calm, clean, and favourable conditions
🟠 Mixed (5–7) — swimmable but with some caution
🔴 Poor (0–4) — unsafe or uncomfortable conditions likely
This score is intended as a guide only and should be used alongside lifeguard advice and official beach warnings.
