Why volunteer? Our tutors share what they love about the experience

Our volunteers at the Tutorfair Foundation do important, life-changing work - but we also try to ensure they have fun doing it! Volunteer tutoring can be an incredibly rewarding experience, and our tutors often learn almost as much as their students do.

We asked some of our volunteers what they love about tutoring with the Foundation…

My favourite part of the volunteering experience is seeing students who are initially shy and reserved become more comfortable to express themselves and present their ideas even if they might be wrong!

I find the ‘wow’ moments when a student suddenly understands something they have previously struggled with, very uplifting and it makes the effort you put into your preparations worthwhile.
— English Tutor
I really love the range of students I have tutored it’s given me a good taste and experience for going into teacher training.
— Maths Tutor
My favorite thing is seeing my students’ attitude to maths shifting over the course of our time together. So many students have a “not for me” mindset when it comes to maths, so I take great pleasure seeing their confidence and self esteem growing each week!

As a secondary school teacher, you can see how large class sizes and overstretched staffing mean that students don’t always get the attention they deserve, so by volunteering as a tutor, you know you are making a huge impact on that student’s learning and future prospects.
— Biology Tutor
I really enjoy teaching English with the Foundation: I love the idea that I can help nurture a love of reading early on that hopefully the students carry with them forever.
